New Age Elder Care - Increasing life expectancy and declining birth rates are causing the world's population to age. Today, according to the Urban Institute, there are more than 54 million Americans age 65 and older. By 2040, that number will increase to 80 million.
In this webinar, we explore how to live a long and healthy life based on the latest AI technology and psychosocial care techniques that can empower the elderly physically and mentally. In terms of technology, we hear from two experts from Japan, a nation with the largest number of elderly citizens of any country in the world: Dr. Yoshiyuki Sankai, developer of the world's first wearable cyborg HAL, and Dr. Takanori Shibata, inventor of PARO, a medical seal robot. In terms of mental health, Mrs. Shiori Lange, LCSW, a psychiatrist and clinical social worker, will discuss how psychological techniques can help older adults and their families. UCLA Associate Professor Lene Levy-Storms Ph.D. manages the panel.

Yoshiyuki Sankai received his Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Tsukuba in Japan in 1987. He has progressed from research fellow at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (“JSPS”) to assistant professor, associate professor and then professor at the Graduate School of Systems and Technology Hello, University of Tsukuba. Prof. Takanori Shibata was born in 1967 and received a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from Nagoya University in '89, '91 and '92, respectively. He was a Research Scientist at AIST from '93 to '98.

Shiori Lange was born and raised in Saga, Japan. She came to the USA in 1999. Shiori earned her bachelor's degree in family studies and human development from the University of Arizona and her master's degree in social work from California State University, Long Beach.
In the past, Shiori provided pediatric case management/consultation, mental health counseling, community support groups, and served as moderator of the Geriatric Social Work Education Consortium for MSW/BSW students through NPOs and public organizations. During the day, Shiori works as a full-time clinical social worker at Seal Beach Health Center providing mental health support (post-acute care, behavioral health, benevolent care, support groups) to individuals aged 55+ and their families. She works evenings and weekends as an Employee Assistance Program counselor and also visits her private practice clients for psychotherapy and elder care counseling. Shiori specializes in older adults, nursing, dementia care, mental health, depression, and mindfulness.
